Atlanta metal purists Gunpowder Gray rounded out Record Store Day at the Star Bar with the release party for its self-titled seven-song EP. It is the band’s vinyl debut, and the first 12-inch release by local metal imprint Boris Records, which has carved out a niche for itself via 7-inches by various ATL metal staples including Mangled, Sadistic Ritual, Spwetilator, and more.
The record opens with two freshly mastered tracks from the 2013 demo, (“Gunpowder Gray,” “Cummin’ My Way”) before firing off five new rounds of heavy, blues-tinged rock ‘n’ roll, givingnodsto classic rockers such as like Thin Lizzy and heavy metal progenitors Pentagram. Album closer “Saints” captures the riffs, lyrics, and drive the band has learned from its heavy metal muses.
